A : Basic expressions

- quip one's job

- resign = move away = step-down [resignation letter]

- retire - get fired → unfair dismissal

- be laid off → layoff - reduce its workforce → downsizing

- be between jobs → be unemployed = be out of job

- work on a fixed-term contract → contract worker

B : Key sentences

- Director Lim, I'd like to quit my job because [ the job is detrimental to my overall health. ]

[ I'd like to devote myself to caring for my child. / my reputation has soured at this job. ]

[ my personal view are not in line with the company's culture. / I'm planning on a career change. ]

-→ Okay, I'll accept your resignation letter. Good luck.

C : Key Dialog

- Why did you decide to quit your job? → I need to have some time to recharge myself.

- Why did Mr. Johnson resign? → I think he has some problems in his personal life.

- I'd like to quit my job because I'm planning on a career change.

-→ You should give me at least two weeks' notice.

- I got fired! I made a stupid mistake again. → Why don't you make some excuses?

- Is it true that John was laid off? → Yes, the company is reducing its workforce.

- What are you going to do when you retire? → I'll live out my retirement on my farm.

- I heard you quit your job. right? → A month ago. I'm between jobs now.

D : Office Talk

- Did you hear that John's contract is running out isn't getting renewed?

- Does he work on a fixed-term contract? → Yes. I think the company just use corporate downsizing

to get rid of workers that it no longer wants.

- Oh my. He is getting fired for no reason.

E : Further Study

- absentee / lateness problems - poor performance

- breach of confidentiality - sexual harassment

- creating a hostile work environment - inappropriate behavior lying or stealing

- Discuss your resignation with your supervisor first.

- Give your employer a reasonable amont of time to fill your position.

- Show that you regret leaving such wonderful people behind.

- Stay on top of your responsibilities in your work.

- Do a great job training your replacement.
