Section 23 Leaving & Taking Messages

 

A : Basic expressions

- call back → Can you call back later?

- leave a message ↔ take a message

- leave one's contact number → leave your work number, please.

- give someone a message → I'll page John with your message.

- ask someone to (verb) → I'll ask John to call you back.

- return a call

B : Key sentences

- May I leave a message? = May I take a message? = Would you like to leave a message?

- Can I have your contact number? = Do you mind leaving your number?

→ My contact number is [phone number] → Someone can reach me at [phone number]

- Could you ask him to call me back? - Can you have her return my call?

- Can I have your name? - Could you spell out [=your name]?

- Can I ask what this call is about? - May I ask what this is regarding

- Could you tell me the reason for your call?

- I'll hand your message to him[her] - I'll make sure he/she gets the message.

C : Key Dialog

- May I leave a message? → Sure, can you give me your name and number?

- Can you ask her to return my call? → of course, I'll personally give her your message.

- Would you like to leave a message? → My office number is 212-12345. extension 123.

- May I ask what this is regarding? → I'm calling with regard to our new products.

- He won't be here until 5 p.m. → Could you ask him to call me back?

- This is JP. Lim of DY Company. My contact number is 123-4567. → I'll hand your message to him.

- May I take a message? → Yes, please. He can reach me at 123-4567.

D : Office Talk

- Mr. White is not in the office right now. May I take a message?

→ Yes, please. This is Monica Park. Can you ask him to call me back?

- Certainly. May I have your contact number?

→ I'm sure he knows my number. And this call is regarding the new contract.

- Okay. I'll personally give Mr. White your message when he gets in.

→ Thanks. Have a nice day.

E : Further Study
