Section 24 Having the Wrong Number

 

A : Basic expressions

- dial

- wrong number → I think you have a wrong number.

- have not heard of → I haven't heard of that name.

- bother → I'm sorry to bother you.

- unsolicited phone call

- digit → a four-digit number → the last digit of your telephone number

B : Key sentences

- What number are you dialing? = Can you tell me the number you dialed[called]?

- There is no one named John here. = There's no one here by that name.

= I haven't heard of him/her.

- You have [dialed] a wrong number. = you've got a wrong number.

= You have reached a wrong number.

C : Key Dialog

- May I speak to Mr. Brown? → There is no one here by that name.

- I think you have a wrong number. → I'm pretty sure I called the Sales Department, right?

- What number are you dialing? → Two three one- eight oh six one.

- I think I dialed 546-1607. → The number is correct, but there is no one name Susan here.

- Can you give me a chance to introduce our new product?

→ Our company does not accept unsolicited phone calls.

- I'd like to replace a defective product. → You have reached a wrong number.

- I'm afraid you dialed wrong. → I'm sorry to have bothered you.

D : Office Talk

- May I speak to Mr. Brown? → There is no one here by that name.

- Isn't this the Sales Department? → Unfortunately not. What number are you dialing?

- Two three one-eight four six one. → I think you have a wrong number.

- I'm sorry to have bothered you. → That's okay. Have a good day.

E : Further Study

- Tell me the number you dialed, please. → Two oh six-three eight forty.

- I'm afraid you dialed wrong. The last dight here is seven. → Oh, I'm sorry to have bothered you.
