Section 26 Answering Machines

 

A : Basic expressions

- take one's call = get a call = receive a call

- be away from A → I'm currently away from my desk.

- answering machine → leave a message on the answering machine.

- voice mail

- return one's call = call back to someone

- look forward to → I'm looking forward to speaking with you.

- quick response = prompt response

- later in the day

- business hours = office hours

B : Key sentences

- This is [ jp ] from [ DY Company ].

- I'm currently unable to take your call. = I'm unable to speak with you.

= I'm currently away from my desk. = I'm presently out of the office.

- If you leave [ ] I'll return your call soon. → [ your name, number, and a brief message ]

C : Key Dialog

- You have a reached the voice mail of JP Lim.

→ This is John Kim. I'm calling about the upcoming event.

- Have you called your client today? → No, I just left a message on his answering machine.

- If you leave a message, I'll return your call immediately. → I'm expecting a quick response.

- I hope it's not too late to return your call. → Not at all, It just perfect.

- Please leave a message after beep. → You're still away from your desk. I'll call you back later.

- I left you a voice mail yesterday. Have you received it? → Well, I haven't checked it yet.

- Have your lunch. I take a message for you. → Don't bother, I'll turn on my answering machine.

D : Office Talk

- Hello. You have reached the voice mail of Katherine Jones. I am either on the phone or away from

my desk. If you leave me a detailed message, I'll return your call the following business day.
